Seminars and workshops on various aspects of professional development (PD) are designed and planned for a diverse group of postdoctoral scholars. Workshops will be organized as hybrid events, with in-person and virtual participation.
Professional and Career Development
Several PD/teaching/mentorship programs, such as CIRTL@UTSA and the Professional and Career Development (PCD) certification program, will cover the essential aspects of building a career in an academic or non-academic environment.
- Professional Development Workshop Series
Postdoctoral PCD certification programs are designed for transferable skill development, and attending four out of six seminars provides a micro-credential badge. The topics offered are time management, effective mentoring, leadership, public speaking, communication: Adobe software, data science & and AI, and writing teaching statements/philosophy.
Focus on developing teaching and learning skills for the diverse learner who wants to build a career in teaching. CIRTL is a national networking community of top-tier institutions that provides resources for training in teaching at institutions of higher learning. CIRTL@UTSA members get training from UTSA and CIRTL cross-networking institutes to develop teaching and learning skills. UTSA postdoctoral fellows can achieve the CIRTL@UTSA Associate/Practitioner/Scholar certificate and use their teaching experience in the classroom or for academic careers.
- Mentoring Workshop Series
Mentorship training will provide an Effective Mentoring certification course for postdocs and graduate students. The program consists of two seminars focused on an overview of Mentorship and how the Mentor/Mentee relationship is essential to thriving in a postdoctoral career. The Cultivation of the Mentoring Network, a hands-on experience seminar, teaches how to develop a mentoring network for overall success. The "Entering Mentoring" workshop based on the CIMER curriculum prepares the postdocs to be mentor, an essential skill for their career trajectory.
The Postdoc Affairs Series is focused on postdoctoral fellows' social and other needs, as suggested by the Postdoctoral Association (PDA). A monthly seminar series organized based on the PDA's on-demand topics focused on the overall growth and sustainability of the postdoctoral fellows. Example topics are Immigration Education and Status Maintenance, Tax filing, work-life balance, well-being, etc.
